Opening Doors to a Career in Care: The uNowanga Nursing Programme.

The uNowanga Nursing Programme is a life-changing initiative run by St John South Africa in partnership with the Johanniter Order. Created to tackle youth unemployment while addressing the growing need for caregivers in Germany, this programme equips South African youth aged 18–29 with the skills, support, and international opportunity to become qualified nurses within four years.

Are you passionate about healthcare and ready for a life-changing journey? The uNowanga Nursing Programme is opening doors for young South Africans to train and work as qualified healthcare professionals in Germany — and applications for the July 2025 intake are now open.

This fully-funded programme, created in partnership with St John South Africa and St. Elisabeth Stiftung in Germany, is designed to equip aspiring nurses with the language skills, hands-on experience, and qualifications needed to build a career in healthcare abroad.

A Two-Part Path to a Career in Nursing

The uNowanga programme spans four years, with the first 12 months taking place in South Africa. During this time, participants will:

  • Enrol in intensive German language classes to reach a B2 level.

  • Gain practical experience working 20 hours per week at the German Senior Residence in Johannesburg or the Baby Therapy Centre in Pretoria.

  • Receive a monthly stipend of R3,000.

  • Live in shared accommodation and receive one meal per day.

This year is both rigorous and rewarding. Participants are expected to study in their free time and must pass the German language qualification to continue to the next phase.

Move to Germany for a Paid Apprenticeship

Those who successfully complete the first phase will relocate to Germany in September 2026 to begin a 36- to 48-month paid apprenticeship. Known as an Ausbildung, this practical training will lead to a fully recognised qualification as a nurse in Germany.

After graduating, participants may choose to stay and work in Germany or return to South Africa with international experience and in-demand skills.

The programme isn’t just about training—it’s about transformation. It provides young South Africans with a solid career path, international experience, and the chance to make a real impact in healthcare.
