An investiture and re-dedication service held by The Priory for South Africa
The Priory for South Africa held an investiture and rededication service on the 16th of August at St. Francis of Assisi Church, Parkview, Johannesburg. The service also included the laying down of the old Priory Banner and the blessing of a new one. The Presiding Officer on the day was Prior, The Archbishop of Cape Town, The Most Revd Dr Thabo Makgoba KStJ.
The Banner of the Priory for South Africa is one of the key symbols of the Order in South Africa and processed in and out of various Order ceremonies including investiture services. At these ceremonies the banner is carried in front of Dames and Knights of the Order. The time had come to replace the banner that had been used in South Africa for numerous years. The old banner was handed to the Chief Executive Officer, Paul Stander OStJ, for safe keeping at Glenshiel, the home of the Priory for South Africa. The new banner was blessed by the Sub-Prelate, The Right Revd Dr Edward Daniels CStJ, and handed to the Prior.
The Investiture of Stuart Waetzel GCStJ
Another special moment was the investiture of Stuart Waetzel GCStJ, Chancellor of the Priory for South Africa, as a Bailiff Grand Cross of the Order. This is the highest grade of the Order and is granted for pre-eminent service to St John. Outside of the most senior leaders of the Order internationally, membership to this high grade is limited to 35 people globally. South Africa currently has three living Bailiffs Grand Cross and there are only four currently on the African continent. Former Bailiffs Grand Cross in South Africa include the likes of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. During the investiture ceremony the personal banner of Stuart Waetzel was also presented. This is a privilege reserved for Grade I Order members and select other office bearers.
