Today, 24 June, is St John Day – the celebration of the birth of St John the Baptist, the patron saint of the Order of St John. It is also the date in 1955 when St John Ambulance and Eye Care moved to its current premises at 129 KE Masinga Rd / Old Fort Rd, Durban, although it was active in the city prior to moving to its current premises.

As a major international charity, St John provides first aid, eye care, healthcare and support services in 40 countries around the world making up the Order of St John which is accredited to the United Nations. One of the earliest known NGOs, St John has been serving people for more than 1000 years. St John Durban is known for its efficient and affordable optometry unit and for running First Aid training programmes.

St. John Memorial plaque unveiled 70 years ago

At the memorial plaque at the entrance to the building, unveiled 70 years ago today, are Denis Hurley Centre Street Lit book vendor: Xolani Gamede; St John Special Project Director Chris Martin and book vendor Mongezi Mtolo DHC Street Lit operates out of the building.

A Relic from the old St John’s Gate

There is a St John Relic in the entrance foyer of St John Durban: a portion of stone from the old St John’s Gate in London set behind glass. Paying their respects are:  Denis Hurley Centre Street Lit vendors: Xolani Gamede and Mongezi Mtolo together with St John Special Project Director Chris Martin and Optometrist Keshni Doorsamy.  DHC Street Lit operates out of the building.
