uNowanga, in partnership with St John South Africa, is creating opportunities to fundamentally change the lives of unemployed South Africans who are looking the develop their skills in healthcare and nursing.
uNowanga is a brain gain programme that seeks to connect young South Africans to sponsored, professional training opportunities, with guaranteed long-term employment post-training, at no cost to them (the youth). The programme is currently focused on the healthcare sector, with the aim of building a pipeline of South African healthcare professionals in nursing. They are trained in Germany in world-class apprenticeship programmes, and at the end of the training, employment is guaranteed.
Why uNowanga?
END TO END SUPPORT
Candidates are supported and salaried from inception to the end of the programme. The first year they study German and learn the basics of caregiving in Johannesburg before the move to Germany for a 3-4 year vocational training.
TRIPLE WIN
It’s only a matter of time before South Africa starts to bleed professionals to the rest of the world
BRAIN GAIN

EMPOWERMENT
We need to raise funding for the first year to support the candidates during the 12 months of language training and immersion in the German Seniors Residence in Auckland Park.
The uNowanga project recruits St John volunteer community health workers and sets them on a path to:
- Learn new skills and gain relevant work experience
- Live and work abroad in Germany
- Gain a qualification in nursing
